How Exercise Keeps “The Ozempic Effect” Going


The efficacy of weight-loss drugs like Ozempic, Wegovy, and Zepbound has long been a subject of scrutiny, particularly regarding whether individuals can maintain their weight loss once they stop taking these medications. However, a recent Danish study suggests that regular exercise could hold the key to preventing weight regain after discontinuing these drugs.

Senior researcher Signe Sorensen Torekov from the University of Copenhagen emphasized the importance of a structured exercise regime in maintaining weight loss without significant regain. The study found that as little as a couple of hours of exercise per week helped participants sustain the weight they had lost while using weight-loss drugs.

The study, published in Lancet eClinical Medicine, recruited participants into four groups: one receiving weight-loss medication, another engaging in regular exercise, a third receiving both medication and exercise instructions, and a fourth receiving a placebo. Results indicated that the exercise groups experienced improvements in their quality of life, and those who combined exercise with medication were able to maintain their weight loss even after discontinuing the drugs.

Lead researcher Simon Birk Kjær Jensen highlighted the simplicity of incorporating exercise into daily routines, suggesting that just two hours of exercise per week, such as brisk walking, could suffice for some individuals. He emphasized the importance of tailoring exercise routines to individual fitness levels and preferences, noting that activities like running or cycling might be more suitable for those with higher fitness levels.

Based on these findings, the researchers advocate for prescribing exercise alongside weight-loss medications to enhance the likelihood of long-term weight maintenance. Torekov underscored the importance of combining exercise with medical treatment, particularly for individuals who are averse to long-term medication use.

In conclusion, the study provides encouraging evidence that regular exercise can help individuals sustain weight loss achieved with the aid of medications, offering a viable strategy for preventing weight regain in the long term.
