Wellness trends aren’t just for those of us who walk upright on two legs.
Our four-legged furry companions are more than just pets, for many, they’re part of the family.
And, of course, we care about the health of our pets just as much as we care about the health of anyone else in our family.
So, as CBD has become a viable option offering a natural solution to problems like anxiety, chronic pain, and even insomnia, pet owners are wondering if this treatment is suitable for their beloved animals as well.
The short answer to such wonderings: yes!
Even homemaking queen Martha Stewart has developed a line of scientifically-backed CBD wellness solutions for canines, her inspiration coming from her own precious pets, of course.
So, exactly how can CBD promote wellness in your pets?
What benefits can CBD offer if your pets are experiencing problems?
And, are there any risks?
Here we’ll explore each of those questions and more…
What Is CBD?
CBD, or cannabidiol, is simply a compound found within both cannabis and hemp.
And, before we go any further, we’ll clear up the thought that may be creeping up in your mind: no, CBD does not contain THC, the psychoactive compound found in marajuana.
Actually, most CBD oils and other products on the market today are made from hemp. But, whether derived from hemp or cannabis, rest assured that this compound won’t have you or your precious Fido “flying high.”
How Can CBD Help Your Pets?
CBD is used as a tool to promote wellness both in humans and animals.
For pets, most CBD products come in either oils or some variety of a chewable “treat” form.
And, believe it or not, prior to the newer hype associated with CBD for pets, some farmers have been using this beneficial compound for centuries in animal feed.
No worries, we’re not talking about anything in concentrated form here. But, hemp used in animal feed isn’t a new concept.
Why hemp? Well, perhaps these farmers knew a thing or two in regards to the numerous benefits the plant has to offer?
As for your pets…
Specifically in reference to the benefits this compound can offer to pets, most studies completed have centralized around its ability to aid in pain management and seizure control.
One such study done through Cornell University found CBD usage to offer a significant decrease in pain, increase in activity, and no observable side effects in animals.
And, a small Colorado University study recently observed an 89% reduction in seizure activity in dogs administered CB as opposed to a mere 43% reduction in the control group.
The benefits to be gained from CBD are made possible by both the plant compound and how the body reacts to that compound.
Every mammal’s (this is why CBD is effective for both you and your furry friends) internal nervous system interacts in a specific way to cannabis (broadly known as the endocannabinoid system).
The central nervous system, peripheral nervous system, and even the gastrointestinal tract and immune system are essential parts of the endocannabinoid system (ECS).
Together, these body systems help to regulate balance and coordination, appetite, mood, heart rate, and other bodily functions.
The American Kennel Club’s chief veterinary officer cites CBD usage as beneficial due to its:
- Anti-inflammatory properties
- Ability to stimulate appetite
- Anti-nausea affects
- Cardiovascular boosts
- Anti-anxiety elements
- (Potential) anti-cancer properties
But, what do actual pet owners say?
Those who have used CBD to support wellness in both dogs and cats report a noticeable difference in:
- joint health and mobility
- reduction in stress
- decreased instances of upset stomach
- increased calmness both with travel and bedtime
- decreased arthritis pain
- lessened anxiety
Potential Side Effects
Whether we’re talking about you or your pets, whenever you try something new, there’s always a potential for side effects.
As there is not current scientific data regarding the side effects of CBD for pets (primarily dogs), the side effects associated with this compound for humans are considered noteworthy.
Dry mouth can occur with CBD usage, as studies conclude that this compound can reduce the production of saliva.
In pets this can be noticeable in a simple increase in thirst.
Lowered Blood Pressure
Even small doses of CBD can produce an initial feeling of light-headedness. The greatest problem with temporary drops in blood pressure, however, arise from high doses.
Proper dosage is essential for both human and pet administration.
CBD’s calming effects make it an ideal treatment for anxiety. However, these same calming effects can also cause drowsiness with higher doses.
*Dosage is key!
Most CBD products on the market have taken the guesswork out of dosing, offering products based on size and breed, but here are a few other things to consider when it comes to using CBD for the health and wellness of your pet.
- Avoid using products containing pesticides, fungicides, or other chemical solvents which can cause side effects unrelated to the actual CBD itself.
- Ensure there is little to no THC in the product.
- CBD oil is considered best for animals, allowing the adjustment of dosage from drop to drop.
- Always follow the dosage suggestions listed on CBD product packaging. Oils and products will vary in concentration, so to ensure you are giving your pet the appropriate amount, do not deviate from these guidelines.
How can I help my dog (or cat) live longer?
If there’s one thing that ALL pet parents want, it’s more time with their beloved dogs (or cats).
And “America’s Favorite Vet” Dr. Gary Richter says that when it comes to your pet’s long-term health, nutrition is at the top of the list.
Dr. Richter’s decades of research have revealed:
Your dog (or cat) NEEDS specific nutrients to maintain strong bones and teeth, a fortified immune system, a glossy coat, and the energy to enjoy a long, active life.
Unfortunately, it turns out most commercial dog and cat foods simply don’t contain all the nutrients needed for optimal health.
It’s simple: they don’t have to.
According to Dr. Richter, big pet food companies know they can make more money by giving your dog only the bare minimum they need to survive.
But Dr. Richter believes your canine or feline friend deserves much better than that.
So now he’s sharing his discoveries in a free video report.
Not only does Dr. Richter reveal the true cause of many common canine and feline health issues…
He demonstrates his favorite way to get essential nutrition back into your precious pet’s diet.
”It’s the easiest thing in the world to do,” says Dr. Richter.
